The Cardigans

"Gran Turismo" is the fourth studio album by Swedish band the Cardigans, released internationally on 19 October 1998 and in the United States in November 1998. This album features a darker and moodier sound, incorporating more electronic elements. Producer and sound engineer Tore Johansson remarked on the album's distinct sound, noting its cold and defined quality compared to the warmer feel of many recordings made at Tambourine Studios. He emphasized that every sound element on the album was deliberately placed, resulting in a meticulously crafted listening experience. The album and the band received a total of seven nominations at the 1999 Grammis, the Swedish equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Gran Turismo went on to sell over three million copies worldwide. In discussing the album's title, the band shared their thoughts in a track included on an advanced copy called "Explain the Title of the Album Gran Turismo." Nina explained that the title can be interpreted in various ways, mentioning their initial ideas of using an Italian or French title. Gran Turismo resonated with them, as they viewed music as a form of tourism and travel. She elaborated that the title captures the essence of the album, which revolves around the quest to find one's place in the world. Peter added that the title perfectly suits the themes explored in the album, highlighting the experience of living as akin to being a tourist in life.
