Xmal Deutschland

"Viva" is the second and final studio album by the German post-punk band Xmal Deutschland, released in 1987. The album marked a departure from the dark, gothic rock sound of their debut, transforming toward more ethereal and melodic songs. The album was heavily influenced by the dream-pop style that was popular in the late '80s. Xmal Deutschland's lead singer, Anja Huwe, offered softer and more operatic vocals this time around. As such, "Viva" features an increased use of synthesisers compared to their previous work, fitting the atmosphere of the time. The lyrics are in German, which adds to the uniqueness of the album. While the band members during the time of release consisted of Anja Huwe (vocals), Manuela Rickers (guitar), Fiona Sangster (keyboards), Wolfgang Ellerbrock (bass), and Peter Bellendir (drums). They worked with producer Hugh Jones for the production of the album. Songs on "Viva" include successful tracks such as "Matador," "Sickle Moon," and "Days of Sorrow." Despite the shift in their sound, "Viva" was positively received and helped cement Xmal Deutschland's place in post-punk music history. However, it marked their final foray into album releases before the band ultimately disbanded in 1990.
