Skid Row

"Slave to the Grind" is a studio album released by the American heavy metal band Skid Row. This highly acclaimed album was released in June 1991 and it's the band's second studio album. The album marks a move towards a heavier, more aggressive sound in comparison to their debut self-titled album which had adopted a more traditional glam metal sound. "Slave to the Grind" gained significant attention for debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making Skid Row the first heavy metal band to secure this top spot with a studio album. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has been recognized as one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. Some of the notable songs in the album include "Monkey Business," "Slave to the Grind," and "Quicksand Jesus." The band during the time of this album comprised of members Sebastian Bach (lead vocals), Rachel Bolan (bass), Dave "The Snake" Sabo (guitar), Scotti Hill (guitar), and Rob Affuso (drums). The creative process behind the album involved all the band members; with Bach, Bolan, and Sabo contributing majorly to the songwriting. The lyrics often delve into serious subjects such as dishonesty, abuse of power, and societal pressures, marking a departure from the themes of simple escapism that dominated their first album. The album was positively received by critics for its musical maturation and its exploration of these heavier themes. "Slave to the Grind" remains one of Skid Row's most successful and iconic releases, solidifying their position as a heavy metal band of significance during the early 1990s.
