The Supremes

"The Supremes A' Go-Go" is an album by the popular Motown all-female group, The Supremes. It was released on August 25, 1966, by Motown. The album marked a significant milestone as it made The Supremes the first all-female group to have a number-one album on the Billboard 200 chart. Exhibiting a sound that was to become their unique trademark, the album contains energetic and upbeat "go-go" music that was the craze at the time in popular clubs of Detroit, Michigan, where the members began their career. The LP includes their signature classic hits like "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart," which helped establish the band's place in musical history. Combining elements of pop, R&B, and soul, the album smoothly transitioned the group from their earlier, more girl-group style to a more mature and refined sound. Initially considered risky in changing their sound, the success of the album firmly established The Supremes as one of the leading girl groups of the era. "The Supremes A' Go-Go" features a total of 12 tracks including three covers, owing to the group's ability to take on any given song and make it their own. Produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, the album reaffirmed The Supremes' status as Motown's top-selling and most popular group of the time.
