L7

"Slap-Happy" is the sixth studio album by the American rock band L7, released on August 24, 1999. This album marked a transition for the band as it was released through Bong Load Records in collaboration with Wax Tadpole Records, an independent label that L7 established after being dropped by Reprise Records in 1997. The album was created as a trio, following the departure of bassist Gail Greenwood. Founding members Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner, along with longtime drummer Demetra Plakas, recorded Slap-Happy with a low budget and produced it alongside their friend Brian Haught. Slap-Happy is noted for its departure from the band’s previous work, featuring more varied and slower-paced songs, some incorporating elements of hip hop. Despite its different approach, the album received mixed reviews from critics and struggled with poor sales, partly due to inadequate distribution and support from Bong Load. While some critics found the album predictable and similar to earlier L7 releases, others appreciated the fresh musical style of certain tracks.
