"Throw Down Your Arms" is the seventh studio album by Sinéad O'Connor, released on October 4, 2005. This reggae album features O'Connor covering classic roots reggae songs, with production by the renowned duo Sly and Robbie.
The album was recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, at Tuff Gong Studios and Anchor Studios in 2004. O'Connor was deeply invested in this project, personally funding it with $400,000, reflecting her commitment to the music and its cultural roots. In a philanthropic gesture, she pledged 10% of the profits to support Rastafari elders in Jamaica.
One of the standout tracks is O'Connor's rendition of Bob Marley's "War," which gained additional notoriety after her controversial performance on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992, where she famously tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II.
The album's cover features a poignant photograph of O'Connor dressed in the attire she wore during her First Holy Communion, symbolizing her connection to her Irish heritage and the themes of identity present throughout the album.
"Throw Down Your Arms" showcases O'Connor's powerful vocals and her ability to reinterpret reggae classics with emotional depth, further solidifying her artistic range.
