"Alpha" is the second studio album by the British rock supergroup Asia, released on August 12, 1983, by Geffen Records. Recorded between February and May 1983 at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, and Manta Sound in Toronto, the album represents a shift toward a more polished, radio-friendly sound compared to its predecessor.
Produced by Mike Stone, who also produced their multi-platinum debut, "Alpha" showcases less emphasis on progressive rock elements and a greater focus on mainstream rock appeal. This approach reflects the band's desire to capitalize on their commercial success and broaden their audience.
The album's cover artwork was created by Roger Dean, renowned for his distinctive style and previous work with bands like Yes. Dean's cover art complements the band's visual aesthetic and highlights their connections to the progressive rock genre.
"Alpha" was the last album to feature the original lineup of Asia—consisting of John Wetton (vocals, bass), Steve Howe (guitar), Geoff Downes (keyboards), and Carl Palmer (drums)—until their reunion in 2008 with the release of "Phoenix."
