Aphex Twin

"Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2" is an EP by Aphex Twin, a pseudonym of the British musician Richard D. James. It was released on 23 January 2015 by Warp Records. Noteworthy is the fact that this album distinctly differs from James's earlier work. Instead of primarily using synthesizers and software, for this album, James explores the concept of using computer-controlled acoustic instruments, which is reflected in the title. The EP features fifteen tracks and runs for approximately 28 minutes in total. It involves the use of Disklavier, a computer-controlled player piano, as well as computer-controlled percussion and algorithms that make artificially intelligent decisions. These AI entities interact with the physical world to generate unique sounds, creating a sense of unpredictability throughout the album. The structure and rhythm of the music contribute to its experimental nature. Several instances suggest an attempt to integrate human and machine-made music, calling attention to the innovative nature of the project. With this EP, Aphex Twin pushes the boundaries and moves away from the traditional form of electronic music. Though the record may not provide casual listeners with a conventional sense of melody or consistency, it's deemed a significant exploration and experiment in Aphex Twin's musical journey, offering a fascinating glimpse into new ways that software and hardware can be used to manipulate sounds. It is a unique and heterogeneous collection of pieces that showcases Aphex Twin's musical versatility and technical prowess.
