"From the Mars Hotel" is the seventh studio album by rock band Grateful Dead. It was released on June 27, 1974, by Grateful Dead Records and received a gold certification in 1984.
The album was primarily recorded in early 1974, between the band's winter and summer tours, at CBS Studio in San Francisco. As customary for the band at the time, they initially recorded live material with plans to re-record the best tracks at a later date. This methodology involved laying down multiple ideas and then reworking them as a band. However, the band decided these sessions had enough quality material and opted to keep the recordings in their original form.
The title of the album was derived from a nickname for singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia's hotel room, in reference to his tendency to stay in his room during the recording sessions.
"From the Mars Hotel" prominently features the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter songwriting team, contributing some of their most enduring compositions, such as "Scarlet Begonias," "U.S. Blues," "China Doll," and "Ship of Fools." It is also among their first albums to feature Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux significantly, the husband/wife duo who became full-time members of the band in 1971.
Upon its release, the album was welcomed with positive reviews, and over time, it has been seen as one of the band's best efforts. Despite coming out during a transitional period for the group, the release stands as a testament to their musical evolution and knack for captivating storytelling.
