The Yardbirds

"Little Games" is the fourth American album by the English rock band The Yardbirds, recorded and released in 1967. This album marked several significant changes for the band: It was the first album recorded after The Yardbirds became a quartet, with Jimmy Page as the sole guitarist and Chris Dreja switching to bass. This lineup change was pivotal in shaping the band's sound during this period. "Little Games" was produced by Mickie Most, who was known for producing successful singles. However, despite Most's involvement, the album did not yield hit singles or gain significant commercial success. The title track, "Little Games," released as a single, did not chart in the UK, leading to the decision not to release the album there initially. It saw limited release in the US, Germany, and New Zealand, where it reached number 80 on the US charts. Following the release of "Little Games," The Yardbirds did not record another full studio album. Mickie Most continued to produce singles for the band, some of which were later included in expanded editions of "Little Games," such as the "Little Games Sessions & More" released in 1992. This collection included outtakes and alternate mixes, offering fans a deeper look into the band's creative process during that time. In retrospect, "Little Games" is recognized as a transitional album for The Yardbirds, showcasing their shift towards more experimental and diverse musical directions under the production guidance of Mickie Most. Despite its commercial challenges upon release, the album remains a part of The Yardbirds' legacy, capturing a unique period in their evolution as a band.
