"Riot City Blues" is the eighth studio album by Scottish rock band Primal Scream. Released on 5th June 2006, it marked a return to more rock and roll driven music, reminiscent of their earlier albums, after a period of exploring other musical styles such as electronica and industrial music.
The album opens with the single "Country Girl," which became Primal Scream's highest-ranking UK single, reaching the top five. Other singles from the album include "Dolls (Sweet Rock and Roll)" and "Sometimes I Feel So Lonely."
"Riot City Blues" was recorded at the band's own studio in London and was produced by Youth, an influential British music producer and a member of the band Killing Joke. This was the last album to feature guitarist Robert 'Throb' Young before he parted ways with the band.
The record itself was met with mixed reviews but was a commercial success. It entered the UK charts at No. 5 and was later certified Gold. The album marked a definite, intent-filled departure from their previous sound, showing off a new bluesy, country-rock vibe. The title of the album is said to be a reference to the band’s chaotic, energetic live performances. Musically, Riot City Blues drew inspiration from a wide range of genres, from dirty blues and country to classic rock and glam, showcasing Primal Scream's eclectic style.
