"Overexposed" is the fourth studio album by American pop band Maroon 5, released on June 20, 2012, by A&M Octone Records. Following the moderate success of their third album, "Hands All Over" (2010), and the massive hit "Moves Like Jagger" from its re-released edition, Maroon 5 aimed to capitalize on their newfound popularity with "Overexposed."
The album was recorded between 2011 and 2012 and features a shift in sound, incorporating more pop-oriented elements. Notably, it is the band's only album not to include keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Jesse Carmichael, who took a temporary break to focus on his studies, with PJ Morton replacing him.
"Overexposed" was produced by a variety of producers, including Max Martin (who served as the executive producer), Ryan Tedder, Shellback, and Benny Blanco. The album's lead single, "Payphone," featuring rapper Wiz Khalifa, was released in April 2012 and became a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping charts in several countries.
The second single, "One More Night," was released shortly before the album's debut and became a major hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for nine consecutive weeks. The album's other singles, "Daylight" and "Love Somebody," also achieved top-ten success on the Hot 100.
Critically, "Overexposed" received mixed reviews. Some critics praised the album for its catchy pop hooks and commercial appeal, while others criticized it for being too focused on lead singer Adam Levine and straying from the band's earlier sound.
Commercially, "Overexposed" debuted at number two on both the US Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, selling 222,000 copies in its first week in the US. It was also the 11th best-selling album globally in 2012, according to the IFPI, with sales of 2.2 million copies.
To support the album, Maroon 5 embarked on the Overexposed Tour from 2012 to 2014, solidifying their status as one of the most commercially successful pop acts of the time.
