Funkadelic

"Cosmic Slop" is the fifth studio album by Funkadelic, released in July 1973 on Westbound Records. Despite critical reevaluation over the years, the album initially saw commercial disappointment, with no charting singles and modest chart positions (#112 on the Billboard pop chart and #21 on the R&B chart). It was later re-released on CD in 1991. The album is notable as the first Funkadelic release to feature artwork and liner notes by Pedro Bell, who became known for his distinctive gate-fold album covers and liner notes for the band until their disbandment after 1981's "The Electric Spanking of War Babies". Bell's liner notes for "Cosmic Slop" include illustrative summaries next to each song title. According to Lloyd Bradley in Q Magazine, the album is seen as a "cornerstone" that bridged between dark musings and outright strangeness, coming just before key James Brown band members began joining George Clinton's musical collective.
