Funkadelic

"Standing on the Verge of Getting It On" is the sixth studio album by Funkadelic, released in July 1974 on Westbound Records. It marked the return of guitarist Eddie Hazel to the band, who had previously left after their acclaimed album "Maggot Brain" in 1971. The album is revered among Funkadelic fans for its musicality, featuring extensive jams and showcasing Eddie Hazel's virtuosic guitar work. One distinctive aspect of the album is the songwriting credits, which are mostly attributed to Grace Cook, Eddie Hazel's mother. This arrangement was a strategic move by Hazel to avoid potential contractual issues with publishing rights. Despite this unconventional crediting, the album is celebrated for its funk-driven sound and experimental approach, typical of Funkadelic's style. Among the tracks, "Jimmy's Got a Little Bit of Bitch in Him" stands out for its subject matter, described as a "friendly" song about a gay friend. This portrayal of homosexuality contrasts sharply with later negative attitudes that emerged in some quarters of the music industry, particularly in hip hop. Funkadelic's willingness to explore diverse themes and push musical boundaries contributed to the album's enduring popularity and its status as a fan favorite in their discography.
