"Underneath the Colours" is the second studio album by Australian rock band INXS, released on October 19, 1981, through Deluxe Records. The album achieved moderate success, reaching No. 15 on the Australian album charts.
The band's journey leading up to this album included signing Gary Grant as their tour manager in 1981, who later became co-manager. They released their third single, "The Loved One," a cover of a 1966 song, in May 1981, which helped establish their presence in the music scene. The band then returned to Studios 301 in Sydney, with producer Richard Clapton, to record their sophomore album.
This album marked a turning point for Michael Hutchence's songwriting, showcasing a more mature style and introducing political themes, as well as the band’s first ballad. Although the album initially faced challenges—according to Kirk Pengilly, the band struggled to follow up their debut—Hutchence expressed satisfaction with the recording process, noting the advantages of having more time and a professional producer.
The lead single from the album, "Stay Young," was released in October 1981 and peaked at No. 21 on the Australian Singles chart. This was followed by "Night of Rebellion" in early 1982. INXS later signed new deals for broader distribution, marking the beginning of their international success. The album cover features an uncredited linocut titled "Folk Dance" by British artist Cyril Power.
