The album features recordings from Cohen's tours and offers a collection of live performances showcasing his renowned stage presence and enduring musical legacy. Songs from the Road was released approximately 18 months after Leonard Cohen's Live in London, which documented his performance at London's O2 Arena in July 2008. The album features 12 tracks from Cohen's 2008 and 2009 concerts. While it does not include rare or previously unreleased material, it does present several lesser-known songs, such as "Heart with No Companion" and "That Don't Make It Junk," as well as alternate versions of some of his more famous tracks. For example, Cohen rearranges the verses in "Suzanne" and adds a new verse to "Bird on a Wire." The recordings on Songs from the Road come from a diverse range of locations, including Tel Aviv, Scotland, Finland, and Cohen's native Canada, showcasing the breadth of his international tour.
