"Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" is the 14th studio album by alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds that was released on 3rd March 2008. It was recorded by the band in June and July 2007 at The State of the Ark Studios in Richmond, London and mixed by Nick Launay at British Grove Studios in Chiswick, with additional editing took place at the band's studios throughout 2007.
The album reflects a shift from the heavy narrative style to a more open and murky outlook with rawer and drier qualities. It has been described as garage rock and psychedelic rock. The lyrical content of "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" is rooted heavily in Old Testament stories and seeks to reposition figures often found in Christian myth to a contemporary setting. The album title is a reference to the Biblical figure Lazarus of Bethany brought back to life by Jesus Christ and how he might feel being brought back into modern-day society.
The album was met with critical acclaim. In 2008, it topped the UK album chart, a rare occurrence for the band, and also found its way onto many critics' year-end lists. Also noteworthy, this album was the first Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds studio album in which the Bad Seeds themselves were credited for the album's production. It was also the last album to feature founding member Mick Harvey, who departed the band in January 2009.
