"Chapter and Verse" is a compilation album by American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen that was released on September 23, 2016. The album is a companion piece to Springsteen's 500-plus-page autobiography, "Born to Run," which was released four days later. The career-spanning album features 18 tracks, five of which have not been previously released.
Regarding the previously unreleased material, it includes late '60s/early '70s recordings by Springsteen's early bands The Castiles, Steel Mill, and The Bruce Springsteen Band. The subsequent tracks span the rest of his career, from his debut album "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." through 2012’s "Wrecking Ball." Each track was carefully selected by Springsteen to reflect the themes and sections of the book.
The majority of songs were studio versions, with the exceptions of "Born in the U.S.A.," which was a demo version, and "Wrecking Ball," which was recorded live at Giants Stadium in 2009. The record closes with "Long Time Comin'" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad," two songs that contemplate themes of personal development and mortality, illustrating Springsteen's interest in not just the American dream, but the intricacies of human life.
