"American Head" is the sixteenth studio album by the experimental rock band The Flaming Lips, released on September 11, 2020. Produced by Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker, in collaboration with the band, the album marks a return to their American roots. It is notable for being the final studio release featuring founding bass guitarist Michael Ivins and keyboardist Jake Ingalls, both of whom left the band in 2021, as well as drummer Nicholas Ley, who departed in 2023. This album also signifies the end of the expanded seven-member lineup that started with their 2017 album Oczy Mlody.
American Head received critical acclaim upon its release. The album was promoted with six singles: "Flowers of Neptune 6," "My Religion Is You," "Dinosaurs on the Mountain," "You n Me Sellin' Weed," "Will You Return / When You Come Down," and "Mother Please Don't Be Sad."
On March 23, 2020, The Flaming Lips announced their sixteenth studio album, American Head, slated for release that summer. The album represents a return to their American roots, with many tracks reflecting Wayne Coyne's challenging upbringing with his brothers in Oklahoma City. The official release date was set for September 11, 2020, and the band introduced the album with the single "My Religion Is You" on June 26, 2020. Coyne also provided a track-by-track breakdown of the album for Apple Music. The album's cover features a photograph of Coyne's older brother Tommy, taken around 1970.
