"Schizophrenia" is the second studio album by Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura, released on October 30, 1987, by Cogumelo Records. This album marks the first appearance of guitarist Andreas Kisser in the band. Musically, it shifts towards a death/thrash metal sound, moving away from the black metal influences of their previous album, Morbid Visions. All tracks were recorded in August 1987. The 1990 reissue includes a bonus track titled "Troops of Doom," recorded in late August of that year.
At the time of its release, Sepultura faced challenges in the U.S. music scene, struggling to secure gigs as club owners were hesitant to book them due to their aggressive style. They eventually signed with Roadrunner Records, which released Schizophrenia internationally before witnessing the band perform live.
The album is set to be re-recorded by original members Max and Igor Cavalera for release on June 21, 2024.
Kisser has noted that his joining the band in 1987 brought in influences of traditional heavy metal and a more melodic style, leading to a fruitful collaboration that integrated their diverse musical backgrounds.
