The Afghan Whigs

"1965" is the sixth studio album by American rock band The Afghan Whigs, released on October 27, 1998, by Columbia Records. The album was crafted after Greg Dulli, the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, underwent treatment for clinical depression. Most of the recording took place at Daniel Lanois' Kingsway Studios in New Orleans, with additional sessions at Ocean Way and Larrabee North in Los Angeles, The American Sector in New Orleans, and London Bridge in Seattle. Dulli produced the album and wrote the majority of its songs. The cover features a photograph of astronaut Ed White during the first American spacewalk as part of the Gemini 4 mission in June 1965. Musically, the album blends rock with influences from jazz, R&B, and soul. Its lyrics explore erotic themes and celebrate sexuality, moving away from the ironic self-loathing found in their earlier work, such as the 1993 album Gentlemen and the more melancholic Black Love from 1996. Music journalist David Stubbs notes that 1965 reconciles a lust for women with respect for them, marking a significant shift in the band’s lyrical approach.
