Built To Spill

"Keep It Like a Secret" is the fourth full-length album from American indie rock band Built to Spill. Following their previous work, particularly the breakthrough "Perfect from Now On," the album was released on February 2, 1999, under record label Warner Bros. It garnered critical acclaim for its more succinct and disparate approach in contrast to their former sprawling epic style. The band, led by front-man Doug Martsch, showcases their characteristic sound: non-linear song structures, layered guitars, and philosophical lyrics, but offers it in a more controlled and focused package in "Keep It Like a Secret." The album captures the dense and lush vibe that the band is known for while also squeezing it into more bite-sized, accessible tracks. Notable songs include "Carry the Zero," "Center of the Universe," and "You Were Right," which saw some commercial success. The overall theme of the album evokes a sense of introspection and existential pondering typical of Martsch's song-writing style. While creating the album, Martsch worked with producer Phil Ek and fellow musicians Brett Nelson (bass), Scott Plouf (drums), and guests Brett Netson and Sam Coomes. "Keep It Like a Secret" is often regarded as being among Built to Spill's best work and it enhances their legacy as one of the key preservers and innovators of indie rock in the late '90s and early 2000s. More than two decades after its release, the album continues to be greatly influential within the genre. The band embarked on an anniversary tour for the album in 2019, playing the album in its entirety to sold-out venues, proving the enduring popularity of "Keep It Like a Secret." The album stands as a testament to Built To Spill's musical prowess and to the timeless appeal of thoughtful, well-crafted indie rock.
