Be Yourself Tonight is the fourth studio album by British synth-pop duo Eurythmics. It was released on 29 April 1985 under RCA Records. The album was its most successful to date, reaching the top 10 in at least ten countries, and also marked a significant shift in musical direction for the band.
This album shows the Eurythmics moving away from the synth-pop and new wave sound of their past albums, exploring a more R&B and pop rock-oriented sound with real instruments, including brass and strings. Their steady move towards a more sophisticated, adult-oriented sound featured guest appearances by notable artists, such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Costello, and Stevie Wonder.
Be Yourself Tonight contains some of the band's most popular tracks, including "Would I Lie to You?", "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)", and "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves". It became a commercial and critical success. It's noted for both its musical diversity and the energetic performances of lead singer Annie Lennox.
The title of the album seemingly comes from a line in the song "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves", “All the sisters are doin’ it for themselves, standing on their own two feet and ringing their own bells,” emphasizing empowerment and self-sufficiency.
