Level 42

"Level 42" is the debut album by the British band Level 42, released in August 1981. It marked the beginning of the band's successful career, blending elements of jazz-funk, pop, and dance music. The album is perhaps most famous for its track "Love Games", which became a significant hit for Level 42, reaching number 38 on the UK Singles Chart. "Love Games" is known for its infectious groove and bassline, courtesy of Mark King, which has remained a staple in the band's live performances and in King's solo appearances. Another notable track from the album is "Starchild", featuring vocals by keyboardist Mike Lindup. While "Starchild" didn't achieve the same chart success as "Love Games", it gained substantial dance airplay on both sides of the Atlantic and was released in multiple countries, including the United States, where it entered the Club Play Singles chart. The third single from the album, "Turn It On", was released in several countries including the UK, Spain, France, and Canada, reaching number 47 on the UK Singles Chart. Though not as widely remembered as "Love Games", "Turn It On" contributed to Level 42's early success and laid the groundwork for their subsequent albums and international acclaim. In 2001, "Starchild" was re-released by Peppermint Jam Records in the UK and Germany, underscoring its enduring popularity and influence in the dance music scene. Overall, "Level 42" remains a landmark album in the band's discography, introducing their distinctive sound and establishing them as prominent figures in the British jazz-funk and pop music scenes of the 1980s.
