"Protection" is the second studio album by the English electronic music group Massive Attack, released on September 26, 1994, by Wild Bunch Records and Circa. The album features a mix of trip-hop and downtempo sounds. In 1995, DJ Mad Professor remixed the album, releasing it under the title "No Protection."
"Protection" showcases Massive Attack's eclectic sound, blending genres like R&B ("Protection" and "Sly"), hip hop/rap ("Karmacoma" and "Eurochild"), reggae-tinged synth-pop ("Spying Glass"), and classical-influenced electronica ("Weather Storm" and "Heat Miser"). The album maintains a similar structure to their debut, "Blue Lines," even using the same Helvetica Heavy Italic font on the cover. The artwork features a futuristic wall behind a charred version of the previous album's cover, symbolizing destruction.
Tricky contributes to the album by rapping on "Karmacoma," which includes a sample from The KLF's "Dream Time in Lake Jackson," and "Eurochild," which incorporates samples from Startled Insects and Liquid Liquid. The video for "Karmacoma" was directed by Jonathan Glazer.
