"Gold Against the Soul" is the second studio album by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. It was released on 14 June 1993 by record label Columbia.
After the acclaim of their debut album "Generation Terrorists," the band was under significant pressure to release a follow-up. Recording took place in outside Wales, in London's Outside/Hansa Studios, a shift from their usual locale. This time around, the Manic Street Preachers aimed to create a more professional and polished rock sound.
The lyrical composition of this album shows a change from their earlier punk-style rhetoric, instead dealing with personal and political themes. Though it encountered a mixed critical response upon its release, it's loved by fans for its unique combination of hard rock, post-punk, and glam.
Despite the stylistic differences with their other works, "Gold Against the Soul" contributed significantly to the band's legacy, paving the way for their future experimentation and diversity in style. Songs "From Despair to Where" and "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" were popular and became the most recognized ones from this album. The album was successful commercially, peaking at number eight on the UK Albums Chart, and was later certified Gold.
