Suede

"Autofiction" is the ninth studio album by English alternative rock band Suede, released on 16 September 2022 via BMG to critical acclaim. It was their first release in four years, following 2018's The Blue Hour, and their first since Night Thoughts in 2016 to feature longtime producer Ed Buller. The album was crafted to mark a stylistic shift from their previous reunion work, which had adopted a more orchestral and cinematic approach. In November 2020, Suede announced they were in the process of recording their ninth studio album. Lead singer Brett Anderson described the new album's sound as "nasty, brutish and short" on the anniversary of Coming Up. Eighteen months later, on 23 May 2022, it was revealed that the album would be titled Autofiction and released via BMG on 16 September of the same year. The lead single, "She Still Leads Me On," inspired by Anderson's late mother, debuted that night at a Brussels concert, which was live-streamed on the band's YouTube channel. The creation of Autofiction followed the release of Anderson's memoirs, Coal Black Mornings in 2018 and Afternoons with the Blinds Drawn the following year. These works influenced the album's lyrics and themes, giving it an autobiographical focus. Anderson explained that "Autofiction" refers to a genre that's part memoir, part fiction, where truth is manipulated. He compared it to how even a fantasy book like The Lord of the Rings contains human truths despite its wizards and goblins.
