Elbow

"Flying Dream 1" is the ninth studio album by British alternative rock band Elbow, released on November 19, 2021, through Polydor Records. The album was created remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the band members writing and exchanging ideas from their homes in Manchester and London. This remote collaboration allowed each member to compose and develop their contributions independently, with the final pieces of the album being shaped through virtual exchanges. The band then reconvened to record the songs at the Theatre Royal in Brighton, which had been closed to the public due to the ongoing pandemic. The empty theater provided a unique atmosphere that influenced the recording process, giving the album a reflective and intimate feel. The space itself, along with the social and emotional context of the pandemic, contributed to the mood of Flying Dream 1, which was described by frontman Guy Garvey as being influenced by "patient, quiet, whole albums" from artists such as Chet Baker, Van Morrison, John Martyn, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Talk Talk, and the Blue Nile. This influence is reflected in the album's subdued, atmospheric tone, with the band creating music that is both meditative and emotional, offering a contrast to the more energetic sounds of their earlier works. The album showcases Elbow's ability to evolve, blending intricate instrumentation with introspective lyrics, capturing the emotional weight of the period during which it was made. Flying Dream 1 represents a moment of quiet reflection for the band, marked by the challenges of the pandemic but also the opportunity for a deeper, more personal exploration of sound and creativity. The album's composition and recording process are emblematic of the band's adaptability, highlighting their ability to stay connected and create music despite the challenges of remote collaboration.
