"Deep Purple in Rock" is the fourth studio album by the English rock band Deep Purple, released on June 5, 1970. It marks the first album recorded by the band's Mark II lineup, consisting of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice.
Following the addition of Gillan and Glover in June 1969, the band began work on the album with rehearsals at Hanwell Community Centre. The aim was to create music that was loud, heavy, and reflective of their live performances. The recording sessions took place at various studios around London amidst extensive touring, which helped to refine the songs and arrangements.
"Deep Purple in Rock" became the band's breakthrough album in Europe, peaking at No. 4 on the UK charts and staying there for over a year. The accompanying single, "Black Night," reached No. 2 in the UK, making it their highest-charting single in that country. However, the album did not perform as well in the US, where their earlier Mark I albums had been more successful. The album is highly regarded as a seminal work in the hard rock and heavy metal genres.
