"Yield" is the fifth studio album of American rock band Pearl Jam, released on February 3, 1998 by Epic Records. Following a short break from touring for their previous album, "No Code", the band began creating new material for "Yield". The lyrics for this album are a contribution of all the band members, and the music style is a return to the band's earlier rock sound, both of which resulted in "Yield" being hailed as a cohesive teamwork project within the band.
Produced by Brendan O'Brien, this album embraced a more anthemic sound compared to its predecessors. Its diverse array of songs ranged from ballads to heavy rock, showcasing the band's expanded range and creativity.
Regarding its critical and commercial recognition, "Yield" debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, and although it didn't outsell its predecessor, the album was still certified platinum by the RIAA in the United States. The album also spawned several successful singles. "Given to Fly" and "Wishlist" ended up hitting the top of Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
The album was also accompanied by a unique form of promotion - the band’s mini-movie, "Single Video Theory", which was a documentary capturing Pearl Jam's studio sessions for Yield, and was released later in August 1998.
In a substantial departure from their previous approaches, Pearl Jam also opted to embark on a full-scale tour for "Yield", a tour that ended up becoming commercially successful and helped reestablish the band's status to their fans and to live music audiences.
In the landscape of Pearl Jam’s discography, "Yield" has often been praised for reflecting a balance among the band's different musical directions and stands as a testament to Pearl Jam's evolution and resilience.
