"Vs." (pronounced "versus") is the second studio album by Pearl Jam, released on October 19, 1993. Following a rigorous tour for their debut album, Ten, the band faced the challenge of living up to its success. This album features a rawer and more aggressive sound, marking the band's first collaboration with producer Brendan O'Brien and the debut of drummer Dave Abbruzzese.
Pearl Jam intentionally reduced promotional efforts for Vs., opting not to create music videos for any singles. Despite this, the album sold over 950,000 copies in its first five days, setting a record for the highest first-week sales at that time. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for five weeks and has since been certified 7× platinum in the U.S.
Recording took place in a tranquil setting that proved challenging for lead singer Eddie Vedder, who struggled with the pressure to follow up their debut. The band employed a more organic approach, recording songs as they developed during jam sessions. The album features a mix of heavier tracks and acoustic ballads, with themes addressing personal and social issues such as child abuse, gun culture, and media influence.
Key singles include "Go," "Daughter," and "Animal," with "Daughter" becoming particularly notable for its acoustic sound and poignant lyrics. Overall, Vs. is recognized for its powerful sound and lyrical depth, solidifying Pearl Jam's place in rock history.
