"Sounds of the Universe" is the twelfth studio album by the English electronic music band Depeche Mode. Released on 17th April 2009 by Mute Records, this album saw a reunion of the band with the producer Ben Hillier, who helmed the production of their previous album "Playing the Angel".
The album's development was postponed due to the band members' solo projects and this delay marked the longest gap between studio albums in their career. During these intervening years, the band explored vintage equipment which significantly influenced the album's sound. To construct the rhythms and textures of the tracks, they experimented with analog synthesizers and drum machines, some of which were used in their early days.
"Sounds of the Universe" debuted at number one in several countries including Germany, Sweden, and the UK. In the United States, it reached number three in the Billboard 200, which was their highest chart peak in the US at the time. The album was also nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards.
The album pushed the limits of their style with songs such as "Wrong", the album's lead single, incorporating powerful, punchy hooks, and "Peace" offering an optimistic and euphonious melody. While there is no defined concept behind the album, recurring themes involve personal introspection, human failings, and an often cynical view of love and humanity.
Despite having mixed reviews, "Sounds of the Universe" has been embraced by devoted Depeche Mode fans as another hallmark release, resonating with their signature fusion of electronic music and poignant lyrics.
