"Speak & Spell" is the debut studio album by the English electronic band Depeche Mode. Released on October 5, 1981, by Mute Records, the album marked the band's transition from the post-punk sound of their earlier work to a more electronic and synth-pop style, which they would continue to refine over decades.
All but two songs were written by Vince Clarke, who ended up leaving the band shortly after the album was released. Despite the internal changes, "Speak & Spell" was a commercial success, reaching the top 10 in the UK and receiving positive critical reception.
It features hit singles like "Just Can't Get Enough" and "Dreaming of Me", not only establishing Depeche Mode as leading figures in the emerging electronic music scene but also influencing countless other artists and bands in the genre. While Speak & Spell offers a more upbeat and pop sound compared to their later, more dark and somber works, it remains a highlight in Depeche Mode's discography.
