Deerhunter

"Halcyon Digest" is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Deerhunter, released on September 27, 2010. The album received widespread critical acclaim and marked a significant moment in the band's career, being their first release distributed solely by 4AD worldwide, rather than through a combination of 4AD and Kranky. Produced by the band along with Ben H. Allen, the album was recorded at Chase Park Transduction studios in Athens, Georgia, with engineering by David Barbe. Notably, the final track, "He Would Have Laughed," serves as a tribute to Jay Reatard and was recorded separately by frontman Bradford Cox at Notown Sound in Marietta, Georgia. Halcyon Digest also marks the last album featuring bass guitarist Josh Fauver, making it a poignant release in the band's history as they continued to evolve their sound and artistic direction. The album's exploration of themes like nostalgia and loss resonated deeply with fans and critics alike, solidifying Deerhunter's place in the indie rock landscape. In discussing Halcyon Digest, Bradford Cox elaborated on the album's title, highlighting it as a reflection of cherished and even fabricated memories, akin to his imagined friendship with Ricky Wilson or living in an old autoharp factory. He emphasized the bittersweet nature of how people romanticize the past, rewriting memories into a more palatable "digest" version of events. Cox further described the album's concept as a collection of "short dispatches," aligning with its narrative style. He noted that while "Halcyon" might suggest tranquility, it actually encapsulates the tendency to idealize even painful experiences. The album's artwork, shot by Atlanta photographer George Mitchell, features a striking black-and-white photograph of Dennis Dinion, a contestant in the Miss Star Lite Pageant. Taken on the venue's last night in 1982, the image resonates with the album's themes, particularly in tracks like "Basement Scene." Cox felt a serendipitous connection to the photograph, believing it was fate when he discovered it in a book that fell open to that page, reflecting his personal ties to the area near the Star Lite Lounge from his childhood.
