Iron Maiden

"A Matter of Life and Death" is the fourteenth studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on August 25, 2006, in Italy and Finland, and on August 28 worldwide, except in the US, Canada, and Japan, where it came out on September 5. This album marked the first time Iron Maiden entered the top 10 of the US Billboard charts, and it achieved notable chart success in many other countries. Although not a concept album, A Matter of Life and Death features recurring themes of war and religion, which are also reflected in the cover artwork. To promote the album, Iron Maiden embarked on the A Matter of Life and Death Tour, where they performed the album in its entirety. A Matter of Life and Death is the fourteenth studio album by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on August 28, 2006. This album marked a significant moment in the band's career, reflecting a heavier and more progressive sound compared to some of their previous work. The album was recorded at Sarm West Studios in London between March 1 and May 4, 2006, with Kevin Shirley as the producer. The band chose not to master the album, aiming to capture a more "live" sound. Kevin Shirley noted that this decision meant the album would present exactly how it sounded in the studio, without additional EQ or compression. A Matter of Life and Death is noted for its heavier and progressive style, with a focus on 1970s progressive rock influences reminiscent of bands like Dream Theater. According to lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson, the album was completed with ease and a sense of spontaneity, with many tracks being first-time takes. The album does not have a title track, a departure from the band's usual practice. The title A Matter of Life and Death was one of several considered options, with the final choice being made somewhat organically among the band members, manager Rod Smallwood, or an engineer named Drew. The album cover was designed by American artist Tim Bradstreet, known for his work on comic books such as Hellblazer and Punisher. The cover features Eddie, the band’s mascot, depicted as a general leading an army of skeletons, along with a tank design inspired by World War II imagery. Bradstreet’s work was complemented by colorist Grant Goleash and retouched by Peacock Designs UK. During the 2006 A Matter of Life and Death Tour, Iron Maiden performed the album in its entirety. This choice received mixed reviews from fans and critics, but the band remained supportive of the decision. Drummer Nicko McBrain and guitarist Janick Gers expressed pride in the album, with McBrain calling it the best he had made with the band. Despite mixed reactions to the full-album performances, A Matter of Life and Death is seen as a testament to Iron Maiden's continued evolution and dedication to their musical craft. It stands as a significant entry in their discography, reflecting their enduring influence in the heavy metal genre.
