"Goo" is the sixth studio album by Sonic Youth, released on June 26, 1990, under DGC Records. Building on the experimental guitar arrangements and layered sound of their previous album "Daydream Nation" (1988), Sonic Youth aimed to delve deeper into topical themes such as female empowerment and pop culture. The album was engineered by Nick Sansano initially, but Ron Saint Germain was brought in by the band to complete the mixing after Sansano's departure.
Upon its release, "Goo" received both critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number 96 on the US Billboard 200 chart, marking Sonic Youth's highest charting album up to that point. Despite limited radio play, the lead single "Kool Thing," featuring Chuck D of Public Enemy, reached number seven on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Over time, "Goo" has become recognized as a seminal work in alternative rock, praised for its musical innovation and artistic significance. In 2020, Rolling Stone included "Goo" at number 358 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, solidifying its enduring impact on music culture.
