Duran Duran

"Liberty" is the sixth studio album by British band Duran Duran. Released on 20 August 1990, the album marked a departure from their previous work, showcasing a more experimental approach and a new pop sound. Despite it being a stylistic departure from their past albums, this album delivered hits such as "Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)" and "Serious". The recording of Liberty began in early 1989. Produced by Chris Kimsey, who was known for his work with The Rolling Stones, the band worked to create a more "organic" sound, combining elements of funk, pop, and rock. Additional inspiration from contemporary trends in dance music saw them incorporating rap verses and samplers into some of their tracks. Despite some positive reception, the album was less successful compared to their previous ones. It reached number 8 in the UK Albums Chart, and the two singles from the album had moderate chart success. Following the mixed results, Duran Duran underwent significant changes, which led them to a return to their roots in the album that followed, titled "Duran Duran [The Wedding Album]". Individual responses to Liberty varied among band members and fans. Some members believe that it has some of their finest work, while others see it as an album where the band lost its direction. Among fans, the response ranged from disappointment to cult-like appreciation for some of the album's unique and experimental tracks. Despite varying opinions, "Liberty" remains a significant part of Duran Duran's discography as a testament to their willingness to experiment and evolve their sound.
