The Smashing Pumpkins

"Shiny and Oh So Bright Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun." is the tenth studio album by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released on November 16, 2018, through Napalm Records. Produced by Rick Rubin, it marks the band's first album to feature founding members James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin since Machina II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music (2000) and Zeitgeist (2007), respectively. In early February 2018, it was announced that original members James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin had rejoined the band. The reunited lineup, along with longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder, began working on new material in February 2018 with Rick Rubin producing. The recording took place at Shangri La recording studio in Malibu, California. Initially, the group had planned to release two four-song EPs, but later changed the format to a full-length album. The album includes the singles "Solara," "Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)," and "Knights of Malta." It reached number fifty-four on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album's development and the role of Rick Rubin in its production became a subject of controversy. Former bassist D'arcy Wretzky claimed that Iha and Rubin's involvement in the album was limited, and that the final product did not reflect the band's usual collaborative approach. Corgan later dismissed the album's status as a full studio album, stating that it was made with a different mindset than the band's previous works. The first single, "Solara," was released on June 8, 2018, followed by "Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)" on September 13, 2018. The album's opening track, "Knights of Malta," was released as a private YouTube video on November 7, 2018. "Solara" was also performed live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 11, 2018.
