The Smashing Pumpkins

"Rotten Apples" (also titled The Smashing Pumpkins – Greatest Hits on the album cover) is a greatest hits compilation album by alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. Released on November 20, 2001, in the US, it came with a bonus disc titled Judas O. The album features a collection of the band's most well-known tracks, as well as a few notable inclusions. One of the key highlights of the album is the track "Untitled," which served as the Pumpkins' final recording before their breakup. This track was completed in the days leading up to their farewell concert at the Metro in Chicago, marking a poignant moment in the band's history. "Untitled" was also released as a single. Another notable track on Rotten Apples is "Real Love." Originally released on Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music, this version is sourced from the factory master tapes, meaning it lacks the pops and clicks that were present on the vinyl-sourced Machina II, offering a cleaner listening experience. The album’s title, Rotten Apples, references a B-side released on the "Tonight, Tonight" single. The compilation album peaked at number 31 on the US charts and sold 77,000 units in its first week of release. While it marked the end of an era for the band, it also encapsulated the creative journey of The Smashing Pumpkins up until their breakup.
