"Live and Loud" is a live video by Nirvana, released on September 23, 2013, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their final studio album, In Utero. This release features the full concert recorded on December 13, 1993, at Pier 48 in Seattle, which was originally broadcast by MTV in a condensed format.
In addition to the complete concert, the DVD includes bonus footage from other performances during the In Utero tour. The release is available both as a standalone DVD and as part of a limited edition Super Deluxe box set, which also includes an audio CD of the concert, making it a coveted item for fans and collectors alike.
The Pier 48 concert, featuring Nirvana, Cypress Hill, and the Breeders, was originally intended for a worldwide New Year's Eve broadcast. Pearl Jam was set to co-headline, marking a reconciliation after Kurt Cobain's earlier criticisms of the band. However, Eddie Vedder's flu led to their last-minute cancellation, leaving Nirvana as the sole headliners.
This unexpected change allowed Nirvana to perform an extended set. Beth McCarthy-Miller, the show's director, noted Cobain's helpfulness during the preparations, emphasizing his concern for the Breeders, wanting to ensure they had a great experience rather than it becoming solely a "Nirvana Show."
MTV initially planned the event in New York, but Vedder's preference for Seattle led them to Pier 48, an industrial venue. Cypress Hill's B-Real later reflected on the situation, appreciating the boost in visibility they received from Pearl Jam's absence, underscoring the concert's unique significance in the context of the music scene at the time.
