"Dune" is the original soundtrack for the 1984 film of the same name, directed by David Lynch. The soundtrack was recorded by the American rock band Toto, marking their first and only film score. The film itself is based on the 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert.
Interestingly, the soundtrack also includes a track by Brian Eno. This album marks a departure from Toto's typical format, demonstrating more of an orchestral and ambient style to align with the otherworldly atmosphere of the film and novel.
It was produced by Toto with Brian Eno. All members of Toto (at the time) handled the composition: David Paich, Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather, and Mike Porcaro, along with late members Jeff Porcaro and their father Joe Porcaro.
While the album wasn't a commercial success like Toto's pop releases, it was praised for its presentation of a cinematic soundscape, fitting for the onscreen spectacle and giving the film a distinctive audio backdrop.
Despite criticisms of the film, the score received acclaim for its ambitious musical panoramas that complemented the alien landscapes and epic themes of Herbert's novel. The band's experimentation with atmospheric synthesizers, orchestral arrangements, and eastern musical influences allowed them to craft a soundscape worthy of the interstellar epic.
Some of the significant tracks in the album are "Prologue", "Main Title", "Robot Fight", and "Leto's Theme". The final track "Take My Hand" is the only one to include vocals performed by Toto members.
