California is the seventh studio album by American rock band Blink-182. The album was released on July 1, 2016, and marked a significant shift in the band's lineup, as it was their first album released after long-time guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge departed from the group in 2015. His replacement, Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, joined Blink-182 as lead vocalist and guitarist for the production of California.
Key production figures in the making of the album included producer John Feldmann, a long-time collaborator of the band. A significant part of the album was written and recorded during intense two-week sessions.
In terms of content, it sets a departure from the band's previous effort, with a more mature and reflective sound. It deals with themes such as love, nostalgia, and the state of the world.
The album was commercially successful, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and received a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. The lead single, "Bored to Death", was a hit and topped the Alternative Songs chart.
However, California received mixed reviews from critics. While some praised the band for returning to their roots and incorporating a more mainstream pop influence, others criticized it for the very same reasons. Despite the departure of DeLonge, Skiba's contribution to the band was met with positive reception by fans and critics alike.
The album's successful reception encouraged Blink-182 to release a deluxe edition of California, featuring new music and modified artwork, in May 2017.
