"Sweet Baby James" is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter James Taylor, released on February 1, 1970, by Warner Bros. Records. The album features two of Taylor's earliest hits: "Fire and Rain," which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Country Road," which peaked at number thirty-seven. It also reached number three on the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart.
Produced by Peter Asher and recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, the album was created on a modest budget of $7,600. At the time, Taylor faced personal challenges, often staying with friends or being "essentially homeless." The song "Suite for 20 G" was named after a promise of $20,000 once the album was completed, leading Taylor to combine three unfinished songs into one suite.
Sweet Baby James was influential in the singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year in 1971. It was later included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.
