Deep Purple

"Slaves and Masters" is the thirteenth studio album by Deep Purple, released on October 22, 1990. This album is notable for featuring former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, who replaced Ian Gillan. The band had briefly considered Jimi Jamison for the role but ultimately hired Turner. Upon release, Slaves and Masters peaked at No. 87 on the US Billboard 200, selling below expectations compared to their previous album, The House of Blue Light, which reached No. 34. Despite its lackluster sales, the band enjoyed a successful European tour in 1991. The recording sessions included a track that was later rearranged for the movie Fire, Ice and Dynamite, although Jon Lord did not participate in that particular song. Although Turner remained with Deep Purple while they worked on new material in 1992, the band decided to reunite the Mark II lineup for their 1993 album The Battle Rages On... Some of the material from the Slaves and Masters sessions reappeared in Turner's solo works. Promotional videos for the album included "King of Dreams" and "Love Conquers All," both featuring the band. Live performances included songs from the album during the 1991 tour, but no tracks from Slaves and Masters have been played live since then. Turner has occasionally performed some of the songs in his solo shows and as part of the Hughes Turner Project.
