Primus

Green Naugahyde is an album by American rock band Primus. It is their seventh studio album, released on September 12, 2011 in Europe, and on September 13, 2011 in the United States. Green Naugahyde marked the return of drummer Jay Lane, who was in the band at its inception as one half of the original rhythm section. The album was the first to feature him on studio recordings. The album exhibits Primus's distinctive and eccentric style, incorporating their unique blend of alternative rock, funk, punk, and experimental music. The lyrical context of the album reflects social commentary and critique, addressing themes such as oil dependence and economic inequality. Green Naugahyde was released after an 11-year hiatus from studio recording by the band. Despite this break, the album was critically acclaimed and hit number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart. It spawned two singles—"Tragedy's a' Comin'" and "Lee Van Cleef". The album, produced by band member Les Claypool, also has a notable environmental stance, with "green" being an American slang term for money and "Naugahyde" a reference to a brand of artificial leather, hinting at the artificiality and greed in society. The band embarked on an extensive tour to support the album, which included their unique multimedia performance that they are well known for. Green Naugahyde represents a successful comeback for Primus and a dynamic addition to their unique discography.
