"Earth" is a studio album by American rock band Jefferson Starship. The album released on February 1978 through Grunt Records label. Jefferson Starship, formed in the early 1970s, is an evolution of Jefferson Airplane, one of the pioneering psychedelic rock bands.
In the lineup for this album was Grace Slick (vocals and piano), Paul Kantner (vocals and rhythm guitar), Marty Balin (vocals), Craig Chaquico (lead guitar and vocals), Pete Sears (bass, keyboards, and vocals), John Barbata (drums and percussion), and David Freiberg (keyboards, vocals, and bass). For the "Earth" album, they moved away from their earlier psychedelic rock towards a more mainstream hard rock sound.
The album proved to be a commercial success for the band. It reached number 5 on the Billboard 200, and it was certified Gold by the RIAA a couple of months after its release. The album carries two top-40 singles, "Count on Me" and "Runaway."
"Earth" is a blend of live concert material and studio recordings, featuring pure rock elements along with traces of progressive rock, and pop. Despite the stylistic changes, the album maintained the group's progressive and socially conscious lyrical themes. It is remembered for its tight musicianship, hard-hitting sound, and the powerful performances of singers Grace Slick and Marty Balin.
