Suicidal Tendencies

"Controlled by Hatred / Feel Like Shit… Déjà Vu" is the fourth album by American crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, released on October 17, 1989, by Epic Records. Despite including re-recorded songs from previously released material, the album is considered a studio album rather than an EP or compilation. It features four covers of No Mercy songs, a cover of Los Cycos' "It's Not Easy," two previously unreleased tracks ("Just Another Love Song" and "Feel Like Shit… Déjà Vu"), and two versions of "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow," including a "video edited" version and a "heavy emotion" version. This album marked the first of two Suicidal Tendencies albums to achieve gold status. The album is divided into two fictional EPs: the first four tracks are labeled Controlled by Hatred and the remaining five as Feel Like Shit… Déjà Vu. It features six new recordings, including covers and previously unreleased material. The format has led to some confusion, with the album being referred to as either a compilation or "a double EP," but it is technically a full-length studio album. During the recording, Suicidal Tendencies did not have an official bassist. Bob Heathcote had left the band, and the bass parts were handled by guitarists Rocky George and Mike Clark. The liner notes credit "Stymee" as a bassist, which has confused fans; this name is actually an acronym from bassist Robert Trujillo's quote, as he preferred not to use his given name. Trujillo appears in the album's accompanying videos but did not perform on the album itself. Suicidal Tendencies rarely perform songs from this album live. "Waking the Dead," along with "Master of No Mercy" and "Feel Like Shit… Déjà Vu," debuted during their 1989 European tour and remained in their setlist until 1994. Some songs, like "Just Another Love Song" and "Choosing My Own Way of Life," have never been performed live.
