Marilyn Manson

"The Golden Age of Grotesque" is the fifth studio album from American rock band Marilyn Manson, released in May 2003. The record marked a departure from the industrial metal style of their earlier works, instead pursuing a new direction with elements of burlesque, cabaret, and swing. The album was reportedly inspired by the glamour and grotesque nature of Hollywood's Golden Age, with a great deal of the album's content and imagery also derived from the degenerate art movement in Germany during the 1930s. It is said to be heavily influenced by the theatricality of German cabaret and theatric vaudeville shows, as well as the art and culture of the Weimar Republic pre-Nazi Germany. During the creation of the album, Manson himself described it as "a collision between the raw, human and visceral elements of sex and evolution filtered through the veil of hypnotic hallucination." "The Golden Age of Grotesque" both musically and artistically was intended to shock and challenge the listener. In terms of commercial performance, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Despite its deviation from their previous works, the album solidified the band’s staying power on the music scene. Some of the most notable singles from the album include "mOBSCENE" and "This Is the New Shit". As of today, it reflects a unique period in Manson's musical career, demonstrating his ability to evolve and adapt while still maintaining his distinctive and controversial style.
